Woombye $10,000 bowls over players and community

The Woombye Bowls Club attracted strong crowds last weekend amidst Mother Natures’ playful mood.
It was all part of the twelfth staging of the successful three-day men’s fours carnival with $10,000 in prize money. Some 96 bowlers attended from all over the Sunshine Coast and as far afield as
Chinchilla, Tara, Dalby, Hervey Bay, Bribie Island and Burrum Heads.
With so many bowlers and supporters in town for the event, many of our local businesses enjoyed what the annual tournament brings to the village. Woombye Bowls Club were keen to thank the major sponsor of the tournament - the Woombye Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank. This is the seventh year the bank has sponsored the tournament and board chairman, Stephen Marshall was on hand to present the winner and runners-up with their cash prizes.
Overall winners for the event with seven wins from seven games was a combined team from Fraser Coast was John Walker, Al Johnson, Mick Roy and Gordon Williams. The boys from Hervey Bay were a formidable quartet and have been close to the podium in previous years, but showed the way in 2017.
The runners-up were a combined team from Club Maroochy, Buderim and Bribie Island in Dave
Billington, Peter Hughes, Ray Gordon and Troy Somerville.
In a great boost for the tournament in 2018, the majority of bowlers confirmed their place before leaving Woombye and it was great to see such high quality bowls in such a tough competition.
All the games were played in great sporting spirit and the persistent showers saw the bowlers and organisers take the interruptions in their stride. Woombye Bowls Club organisers were very keen to thank the many volunteers who worked tirelessly over the three days to make this such a successful carnival for the small club.
Woombye Bowls Club President, Graham Clark said it was a pleasure to host the talents of the teams and is delighted the tournament continues to provide a boost for local businesses as well.
“The prize money is obviously a big draw card but the event is also popular because we hold it on a traditional surface. Our grass continues to be one of the reasons we attract the best to this tournament" Graham said.
